A21 Campaign // Unbreakable

Wednesday, February 3rd, 2010

As a college sophomore at Azusa Pacific University in Southern California, I was oblivious to the fact that slavery still exists in the 21st century. Growing up in the U.S. I had always thought of slavery as something of the past. It never occurred to me that it could possibly exist in today’s world. It was on a mission trip with my school that summer that my eyes were opened to a dark reality that is currently going on in the world. Today, there are 27 million people living as slaves.

Seven other classmates and I boarded a plain in the summer of 2004 and traveled to Greece. This was the farthest this Southern California native had ever traveled, and I had know idea what I was going to experience. While we were in Greece, we were introduced to one of the world’s largest smuggling businesses – human trafficking. We met girls who had been promised jobs in Greece, and when they arrived, faced the harsh reality that the jobs waiting for them were nothing like what they expected. They were stripped of their legal documents, their rights, and their innocence and forced into the sex industry against their will. A lot of them were threatened that if they ever told the authorities or tried to escape, that their families would be killed.

Our team met a lot of these girls who were living in Greece at the time. I was amazed because when talking to one of these girls, you would think we were talking to another college sophomore who was getting an education, chasing her dreams, and living the normal life of a 20 year old. But, the terrible reality was that her life was so much different than ours. She was living as a slave and had no other choice but to succumb to the threats of her trafficker and live as a prostitute. It was heart-breaking, and I have never forgotten the experience or the lives that we met while we were in Greece.

This is why I am partnering with Forgotten Stories, and giving proceeds from “Unbreakable” to contribute to the A21 Campaign. This organization is currently in Greece and is actively rescuing women and children who have been trafficked into the sex industry. The A21 Campaign is bringing hope to these seemingly hopeless situations, and is remembering the 27 million forgotten women and children who are currently enslaved. I have seen the faces of those enslaved, and I can never forget.

When you purchase my new record, UNBREAKABLE, from Forgotten Stories, $5 will be contributed to the A21 campaign. Even if you’ve already purchased the record, buy another one and give it to a friend. Although $5 is a small amount of money, it is contributing towards giving someone freedom and hope. It is just 1 way to make a difference.

Hours away from the release . . .

Thursday, January 21st, 2010

I’m anxious and a little nervous. I am heading to the church in a few minutes and I am excited for what God wants to do tonight. The pouring rain wasn’t in my plans, but it made me realize that I need to let go of my plans, and just let God do His thing. Praying that God will keep everyone safe on the road.

Song Story: “In Your Eyes”

Monday, January 18th, 2010

It was late one night, and I was scrambling to write 1 more song before I went into the studio. I sat at the piano in my living room and started to play the chord progression. I was trying to play very quietly so that I would not wake up the entire house, which I think explains why the song is so tender. The melody and chords came together so quick, which doesn’t happen very often. I began to write the lyrics and decided that I wanted to take the listeners on a journey through a prayer. I start by asking God if I could walk a mile in His shoes, then I ask Him if I could spend a day in His mind, then I ask Him if I could feel what He feels in His heart, and then I sum it all up by asking if I could just see through His eyes. Can you imagine what kind of people we would be if we saw the world through God’s eyes? Here’s the finished lyrics:

If I could walk a mile in Your shoes / I would never pass another stranger or turn away from hunger / I’d be on my knees begging too / Just to show him we are brothers, in this life together

If I could spend a day in Your mind / I’d see the beginning and the end / How it all will work together / How all of history was designed / Just to lead us to our Father and live with You forever

If I could see the world through Your eyes / I would be in sorrow with the widow, comforting the captives / If I could see the world through Your eyes / I would pay forgiveness to my debtor / For sin is not remembered in Your eyes

If I could feel the pain in Your heart / When You gave Your one and only Son / If I could hear the cry of heaven / I would have a different love / For the broken and rejected / In You they are remembered

If I could see the world through Your eyes / I would see the helpless and the stranger / They can’t just help each other / If I could see the world through Your eyes / I would see a broken generation / How we are not forgotten in Your eyes
