I was in my 3rd year of college and wanted to write a new song. I was talking to my mother and asked her, “What should I write about?” She told me I should write about my father. I let the idea float around in my head for a while and decided I wanted to do it.
I lived at Azusa Pacific University at the time, and I made my way across the campus to the music building. It was late in the afternoon as I went up the stairs. I could hear the sound of different music majors practicing their instruments as I walked through the halls. I found an empty practice room with a piano and I went right in and closed the door behind me. All of the practice rooms were tiny and most of them had baby grand pianos stuffed inside of them.
As I entered the room and closed the door, the noises of the music building were silenced and I was left alone.
Unlike a lot of the songs I write, this one ‘came to me’ quite quickly. The verses came first as I began to compare my father to King David and Solomon. I sang about his wisdom and patience and how he is heroically unlike the men who the media tells us we should imitate. I set up my MP3 recorder and came out of the tiny practice room a few hours later with “Unbreakable.”
Verse 1:
You ever seen patience and honor and virtue
A heart after God like the King David did
You ever had a hero in sight
That seems to always make everything alright
Verse 2:
You ever heard wisdom and truth that could teach you
Like Solomon’s time and his writings of virtue
The light of the Lord has shown down
Once again on unbreakable ground
Chorus:
The unbreakable one
Steadfast in love and in battle
You never will give up
When mountains to climb
Your heart of a lion will rise up
And your love will speak louder
Verse 3:
See I watch the tv and movies and I see
All of the men and who they try so hard to be
Some say to lose hope in being a true man
But I say I’ll be like my dad
Would you believe that
Even if I told you
Bridge:
Every action is like thunder
Every word is like gold
When the world comes from under
You’re unbreakable
